O ne of the biggest convenience store chains in Japan, Lawson, has started experimenting the self-checkout “Regi-Robo” which is developed by Panasonic.
The basket has a built-in scanner and customers can scan items while they shop. Once shopping is done, customers set the shopping basket on the “Regi-Robo” and it will put items into a shopping bag automatically after you pay.
It reduces the heavy traffic at checkout and time of manual cashier by letting customers do some work.
It accepts all kinds of payment. They estimate 10% less work for employees by “Regi-Robo” and store manager said.
“Customers see the line-up when they come in and make the call to use scanner basket for Regi-Robo or not. It has been 2 weeks since it has introduced. We see some customers got used to it and judge by themselves to use scanner basket for Regi-Robo or not when they come in.”
Lawson announced that they will start installing Regi-Robo one shop at a time starting from 2018.
